Law Entrance Exams Schedule – CLAT, AILET, LSAT, AIBE for 2019

Students who aspire to study law can appear for various entrance examinations conducted every year. Besides CLAT where over one lakh students register, there are other entrance examinations like LSAT and AILET. Here is the list of these exams and their tentative schedule.

1. CLAT 2019

Every year, Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) is conducted for admissions to undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) degree law programmes. The National University of Advanced Legal Studies will conduct the examination on Sunday, May 12, 2019.

Application process: 1st week on January 2019

Hall Ticket/Admit Card: 3rd week of April

Exam Date: May 12, 2019  (3 pm to 5 pm)

Exam Pattern & Syllabus

Both the undergraduate and the postgraduate papers will be two-hour long online exam. While the UG paper will be for 200 marks, the PG paper will carry 150 marks. The CLAT exam will have a negative marking of 0.25 marks for every wrong marking.

The Common Law Admission Test will have questions from as many as five subjects including Elementary Mathematics, English, General Knowledge and Current Affairs, Legal Aptitude and Logical Reasoning.

English Language including Comprehension – The questions from this section test the knowledge of English language, as they are based on comprehension passages and grammar.

The comprehension passage include a paragraph, where the candidates are questioned over the understanding of the passage and its central theme. There may be questions asking meaning of the words. Further, Grammar questions cover topics like correction of incorrect sentences, fill in the blanks with appropriate words, jumbled words, etc.

General Knowledge and Current Affairs – The following section tests the knowledge about general awareness including Static GK. Apart from the static GK, this section’s questions also cover world events and current affairs broadly between January 2018 and May 2019.

Mathematics with Numerical Ability – Questions from this section are of general numerical ability type mainly from Class 10th level. The Mathematics questions will cover the generalised topics including algebra, percentage, profit and loss, simple and compound interest, geometry, trigonometry, height and distance, statistics, time, work and distance, mensuration and probability.

Legal Aptitude – The section is considered the most important of all with the fact that most of the questions come from this section and the section is nowhere taught at the Class 12th level. Therefore, an upper hand in this section gives an edge to the CLAT applicants over other competitors.

The section’s questions test the interest of CLAT aspirants towards study of law, research aptitude and problem-solving ability. The questions are framed on legal propositions and set of facts satisfying the propositions. The propositions may not be true in the real sense but law aspirants have to assume the true proposition based on the set of facts and answer the questions accordingly.

Logical Reasoning – The questions from this section test the ability to identify patterns, logical links and rectify illogical arguments. The section also covers a variety of logical aptitude questions including syllogism, logical sequences, analogies, blood relations, missing series, coding-decoding, etc. Moreover, there are no visual reasoning questions in the logical reasoning section.

2. LSAT 2019

Law School Admission Test is an international level entrance exam shortly known as LSAT 2019. It will be organized by the Law School Admission Council (LSAC), USA. LSAT India exam is a national level conducted through offline mode for law aspirants. It is organized for providing admission in UG, PG and integrated law courses in India. More than 85 law institutions and colleges consider the LSAT score for providing admission. The LSAT is a standardized test of reading and verbal reasoning skills required for admission in law courses.

Registration/Application Process: 1st week of October to 1st week of May 2019

Hall Ticket/Admit Card: 1st to 3rd week of May 2019

Exam Date: 3rd week of May 2019

Results of LSAT: June 2019

Exam pattern & Syllabus

The exam will be divided into four sections— for Analytical Reasoning, Logical Reasoning and Reading Comprehension— which will contain 24 questions each (92 to 100 questions in total). Candidates will have 35 minutes to attempt every section

  • Mode of Exam: The exam will be conducted through pen and paper based (offline mode).
  • Duration of Exam: The exam duration will 2 hours 20 minutes. 35 minutes will be given for each section.
  • Sections: The question paper comprises four sections, i.e. Analytical Reasoning, 1st Logical Reasoning, 2nd Logical Reasoning and Reading Comprehension.
  • Type of Questions: The question will be of a Multiple Choice Question some with four answer choices and others with five options.
  • Number of Question: There will be 92 – 100 questions will be asked in the exam.
  • Marking Scheme: 1 mark will be awarded for each correct response.
  • Negative Marking: There is no negative marking in LSAT exam.

Analytical Reasoning – It will measure the ability to understand a structure of relationships and to draw logical conclusions about that structure. Candidates will be asked to reason from a set of rules & statements or that describes relationships among persons, events, etc.

Logical Reasoning – This section checks the ability to analyze, complete arguments and critically evaluate. Test taker has to read and comprehend a short passage, then answer a question about it.

Reading Comprehension – This section will contain four sets of reading questions. Each section will consist of a selection of reading material, followed by four to nine questions that test reading and reasoning abilities.

3. All India Bar Examination (AIBE)

All India Bar Examination (AIBE) is managed every year by the Bar Council of India (BCI). On the basis of AIBE entrance exam, BCI provides the “Certificate of Practice” to the eligible law candidates. The candidates those have passed the law degree and wish to do practice in the field of law can apply for this exam. Its written examination will be conducted across 40 cities of India in different languages.

Last year, the exam was conducted on June 10 to grant permission to law graduates to practice law.

Exam pattern & Syllabus
  • Mode of Exam: The examination was conducted through offline (pen and paper-based) mode.
  • Duration: The exam duration last year was 3 hours and 30 minutes (2:00 PM to 5:30 PM).
  • Type of Questions: The question paper was contain objective type questions.
  • Part: The paper was comprises of two parts, i.e. Part I and Part II.
  • Marking Scheme: One mark was given for each correct answer.
  • Negative Marking: No marks was deducted for wrong answers.

Candidates should prepare for the exam as per the officially prescribed syllabus. Some major topics included in the syllabus are Constitutional Law, Alternative Dispute Redressal including Arbitration Act, Family Law, Administrative Law, Company Law and various other law topics.

4. AILET 2019

This year, the All India National Law Entrance Test (AILET) will be conducted on May 5, 2019. The exam will be held from 3 pm to 4 pm at various centres across India. The admission notice will be issued in the first week of January 2019 and the online application forms will be available at nludelhi.ac.in from the first week of January 2019.

Every year, AILET is held for admissions to the five-year BA LLB (Hons) programme, one-year LLM and PhD programmes.

Exam Date: May 6, 2019 ( 3pm to 4.30 pm)

Exam Pattern & Syllabus

For B.A LLB – The exam consists of 150 questions. Each question carries one mark. Each incorrect entry and multiple answer entry is considered for negative marking. A negative marking of 0.25 is applicable. AILET 2019 question paper will contain the following sections- English, General Knowledge, Legal Aptitude, Reasoning and Elementary Mathematics.

For LLM – LLM  paper consists two sections- 100 Objective questions and one Essay question. The total marks for the exam is 150 –  100 marks for the objective section and 50 marks for the essay.

For PH.D – AILET exam for Ph. D programs consist of two papers – Paper 1 (Research Methodology) and Paper 2 (Research Proposal Specific Paper). Paper 1 contains 100 multiple choice questions. In paper 2, candidates have to submit a research proposal in 15 pages on the topic of their Ph.D. degree.

English Language – Comprehension passages, Synonyms, Antonyms, Choosing correct words, Idioms and phrases, Jumble words and sentences, Fill-in the blanks

General Knowledge – History, Geography, General Science, Economics, Civics and Current Affairs

Law – Study of law, Research aptitude and Problem solving ability

Basic Maths – Profit and Loss, Speed and Distance, Time and Work, Algebra, Average, Permutation and Combination and Venn Diagrams

Reasoning – Logical and Analytical reasoning skills

5. Delhi University Entrance Exam (DUET) 2019

The Delhi University conducted the entrance examinations every year for admissions to its Under Graduate and Post Graduate courses which includes courses on Law. Last year, the entrance examinations was conducted between June 17 to 26, and the admit card was released on June 15.

From last year, the university also started conducting online entrance examinations for admissions to postgraduate, MPhil and PhD courses.
